In a literature class, we spend a great deal of time discussing the characters -- who they
are, what they decide, what motivates their decisions, and how their decisions shape the world that is their story. But
what about the authors who create those characters? What shapes them, and in turn shapes the message they send us? Literature,
after all, is a letter from the author to the reader, sharing a viewpoint on life. Where does the author's viewpoint come
from, and what can it teach us?

In this webquest, you will examine the historical forces behind two author's "expressions" -- the painting Gassed, and
the poem "Dulce et Decorum Est." Using your knowledge of the time period between 1914-1925, you will draw a connection between
the art and the life of artist, and then become the artist yourself, crafting a piece of literature that sends a "message"
to future generations.
